Gerda Taro Catalog & Website
Student project • 2024 • instructed by Anat Saacks
A catalog and a website dedicated to war photographer Gerda Taro, who was active during the Spanish Civil War.
She was the first female photojournalist to die while covering the frontlines of a war.
Taro was both the partner and professional partner of photographer Robert Capa.
She came up with the name “Robert Capa” as a fictional American photographer, and she and André Friedman used
it jointly to navigate political tensions in Europe and attract clients from the American market.
Over time, the name became solely associated with Friedman, overshadowing Taro’s groundbreaking work.

Research
The research included reading dozens sources, reconstructing a timeline and curating a visual archive

Catalog
The catalog design was intentionally minimal yet dramatic, placing Taro’s work at the center while telling her story through timelines and the sequencing of photographs. I chose to leave the binding threads visible to symbolize the way her life was cut short by war.

Website
The website is a digital version of the catalog, featuring horizontal scrolling that reflects the catalog’s landscape format. I designed the main banner to resemble the film development process.
